In the US alone, more than 60m plastic bottles a day are thrown away. To reduce such use of plastic, Paboco has developed an alternative top plastic: a recyclable paper bottle.
The bottle uses wood fibres from sustainable forests, and aims to be at the forefront of the transformation towards sustainable bottle packaging. It is targeted at a wide range of brands and liquid contents, including carbonated beverages. Current prototypes use some recycled plastic but the goal is to create a 100% paper bottle.
Paboco is a joint venture between Danish paper packaging material developer BillerudKorsnäs and bottle manufacturing specialist Alpla. Paboco describes itself as an innovation community ‘joining some of the world’s leading players in materials, design and technology’.
Paboco aims to make the bottle available for a range of brands and uses. It has produced bottles for Absolut, and worked with Coca-Cola and Carlsberg.
